FINALLY, my birthday party!

My best friend is coming over for a sleep over tonight. We will be going to a concert with my family, and tomorrow going to a tea room (http://www.tealaceandroses.com/) with my mom. My newest litter of NDs is doing great! (http://www.rabbitsontheweb.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5778) Me

mini satin

the mini satin is a relatively new breed. they are a much more than just a smaller version of their larger parents.

they average about 4 1/4 pounds. they are a dwarf breed and as such tend to have a fuller head and shorter ears. their body type is a small yet meaty animal. much like a florida white.

they are currently only recognized in white. though there are many different varieties available. and numerous certificates of development pending.

The Slow Reboot

(I'm going to be testing HTML while doing this blog, so please excuse any weird letters)

I haven't been active in the rabbit world for over a year, trying to force myself out of it... not too efficiently, I might add. I was losing my interest, without goals. I needed specific goals instead of just following the herd! So I looked at my animals... I had been barely trying to get BEWs. And then I thought... whatever happened to creating BEWs? That is what I shall doe! Chocolates and BEWs!

My doe Queenie is due soon. Queenie (AKA Rah's Queen Elizabeth II, her dam being nicknamed Elizabeth by a barn-helper... and Queenie was her dams twin likeness sooo... yeah :D) was bred before I went on vacation, on August 2nd. When I got back on August 15th, I palpated 3-4 kits.

This is Queenie's first litter. Queenie is very near and dear to my heart, I am hoping all goes well.
She has gotten a bit antsy, we're now in Week 3 of pregnancy. She's tipping over his crock for the first time and drinking more. She won't come up for petting as much as usual. It's stressful for me and her!

I found out too late that our plans changed for dropping my brother off at University for the fall. Before, we would be back in the afternoon of the 1st. Now, it's the 2nd. Her Day 30 is Sept 1st, her Day 31 is Sept 2nd... so I'm worried I won't be here incase something happens. Queenie is a first time doe.
My nearest trusted rabbit friend lives 20 minutes away and works fulltime. The best I can do is prep a nestbox before I go and leave it all in the hands of someone that only knows how to feed and water rabbits... very stressful!!

On another note, I've almost completed my Fall Cleaning... early! I just have to pressure wash my nestboxes, show carriers, and two stackers (& the floor beneath them & the walls behinds them). Then I'm DONE bwahaha!!

And yeah. That only leaves me with raking the roof of the pine needles, but I don't REALLY need to do that, do I? Noo.. it's enough that I already cleaned the 5'x3' sliding glass window? haha :D
Why did I paint the walls white again? I know they bounce light better, but MAN. Does anyone know how badly urine stains white walls? Bleach isn't working! What works better than bleach? Maybe vinegar???

    satins

there are 3 breeds recognized by the american rabbit breeders assoc with satinized coats. the satin angora, the mini satin and the satin.

the hair shaft of a satin coat is finer than most normal furred animals. it also has a translucent outer shell which refracts the light, giving them their unique sheen!

    Sad News

A dear friend of the family passed today. We have known Betty for 20 years. She was one of the first friends we made when we moved upstate. We used to travel to rabbit shows together. Her daughter and mine were great friends and still are. They were the backbone of our 4H rabbit club. Betty will certainly be missed she was one of the most helpful and friendly people I have ever known. I didn't want to bring anyone down, I just had to get it out. The funeral is this sunday. I will write again when I have something more cheerful to say.

    French lop

a large commercial type animal. most aptly described as MASSIVE! they range from around 11 to about 14 pounds. they have lots of different colors, both solid and broken. most have a very gentle disposition and make good pets esp for small children, since the rabbits are so mellow.

    happenings in my barn

well today i went out and tattooed a bunch of havanas. had to put together an entry for our fair. bringing i think 24 havanas and 10 satins.

I have loaded tinyMCE onto the site

    This is pretty cool.

It really lets me have a lot of flexibility for people

    When they add entries.

    1. better formatting
    2. easier entry
    3. more rabbitness.

    why i show rabbits

Ive raised/showed nearly every type of livestock out there, and so you may wonder why rabbits??

well there are many reasons, but for me one of the acutal deciding factors was the costs involved. both monatarily and time and space.

rabbits take up far less space than any other species (even chickens- when they are kept for show that is). i can have a barn that is 12x24 and that will easily house a herd of quality show animals with room to spare.

their monatary costs are far less than most any other as well, since their relative upkeep is cheaper than any other. (ok so i do spend more on my rabbits than my horse, but there is only 1 of her and about 50 of them). when i take them to shows, i can get them in my car. ive fit as many as 20 carrier holes in a VW rabbit before!

Properly Posing Mini Rex, and other Compact and Commercial Breeds

In the middle of the 'dog days' of summer, and before the fall showing season begins, I wanted to bring up the subject of posing, proper and improper.

I come accross many websites where the animals are improperly posed, either too long or too short, and it distorts the overall VISUAL quality of the animal. I can see through this from experience in raising rabbits, but many people are only looking at depth and overall shortness of the body, and ususally want the rabbit that is overposed, because its TOPLINE looks better. The same animal, if too streched out, will look long and flat, ususally showing some kind of shoulder issues, because this rabbit was bred to be in a proper pose, and when all laid out, the shoulders will also look flat and unbalanced with the rest of the rabbit.

    Rabbit Breeds

There are lots of breeds of rabbits, here you can find information about each, and relevant links.
